My Child, I have seen how your dreams have been curtailed and thwarted by the enemy and by your mistakes and the mistakes of others. These dashed dreams have disappointed you and now you wear disappointment like a badge or a patch on your sleeve. But that is not what I would have you wear – the new clothes that I gave you have no room for badges like that! Throw off that cloak that carries a badge of disappointment! Throw off that spirit of despair – see, I gave you a garment of praise to wear! In me is the power to make all things new… I will repair, renew and restore broken dreams. As for mistakes and regrets – remember that your repentance and my forgiveness means that they no longer count; they have no place to thwart your present and your future. Let’s dream again, with no thought of the disappointments of before. Wear your garment of praise and shine brilliantly again!
Isaiah 61:1-4
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion – to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendour. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.
